Department Overview
- The office is built on the philosophy of the merging of the theoretical and practical legal methods; which essentially aim on assisting the students on gaining experience and skills through facing practical cases. Also providing free legal services to the unable category from the society: to help them exercise the right to litigation and legal assistance as they do not have the legal or material means to do so.
- The legal office is related to social justice and focuses mainly on the practical training of the law through the provision of legal assistance. As it is a practical educational system that trains students on the skill of the legal profession and legal skills in general.
- A unit called "Intellectual Property Unit" will be established in the clinical legal office to provide a specialized program in intellectual property. It will be provided through lawyers specializing in intellectual property. The service will be provided for the faculty members and students of the University of Sharjah at no material cost.
- The legal services provided by the office are free of charge. (Pro Bono cases).
- The relationship of the insurance relationship with the clinical legal office for any legal liability.
Objectives
The office aims to develop the skills and practical side of the college students by providing services to the community members related to legal advice. The legal office connects the Faculty of Law with the UAE society in general, clients, some governmental institutions and non-governmental organizations that are preoccupied with defending the rights of clients or litigants in particular. Therefore, the office aims to:
- Training students to provide legal services and advice through direct dealings with those with legal problems who do not have the legal or material means that enable them to hire lawyers or obtain paid legal advice.
- Spreading the legal culture in society.
- Establishing the ethics of the legal profession among students, familiarity with the legislation regulating the work of lawyers and courts, and devoting the principles of volunteering work in society.
- Communicate with intellectual property lawyers by asking questions and learning about the most important intellectual property issues.
Target Groups
- Students, their families, and university personnel who do not have the financial capabilities to seek legal advice, however not with regard to issues related to their relationship with the university (excluded).
- The segments of society who are unable to appoint attorneys for law firms who do not have the financial capabilities to seek legal advice
- Government institutions or community organizations by providing consultations, research, statistics and draft laws
Areas of work
- Providing legal advice by students to the person concerned after reviewing and finalizing it by a lawyer or faculty member.
- Preparing defense memorandums or draft statements of claim or requests under the supervision of a lawyer or faculty member.
- Drafting contracts or wills under the supervision of a TRACE member.
- Carrying out legal awareness campaigns for the community
- Providing, through intellectual property lawyers: workshops, training courses in copyright, trademarks, patents and industrial property.
