The Infectious Disease Research Group at the University of Sharjah
The Infectious Disease research group, led by Dr. Sameh Soliman and Postdoc Rania Hamdy, examined the structural characteristics and virulence factor of SARS-CoV-2 infections to design a potential therapeutic strategy, receiving a one million AED grant from Sandooq Al-Watan, resulting in two patents, several publications, and multiple awards including Sharjah Islamic Bank Award and second place at ESCM for a professional poster presentation; their findings revealed two compounds with superior in vitro antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2, showing dual inhibition by targeting viral invasion through S-protein cleavage with the host protease TMPRSS2 and viral replication through RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp), enhancing phagocytosis and meeting drug-likeness criteria with promising physiochemical and pharmacokinetic features.
