According to the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking of 2023, the University of Sharjah (UoS) is ranked 86th globally in sustainable development field and adherence to clean environment standards. The University has also maintained first place at the United Arab Emirates (UAE) level for the seventh consecutive year in the same ranking, second among Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, and third at the Arab world level.His Excellency Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the UoS, emphasized that with the support of His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, and President of the University of Sharjah, the University has maintained the first place at the UAE level for the seventh year in a row, and is among the top 100 world universities, second among GCC countries, and third at the Arab world level.

The Chancellor indicated that 1183 universities from all over the world participated in the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking of 2023, pointing out that the University has made remarkable progress in the criteria on which the classification is based, as it advanced to rank the first place globally in efficient management of water, achieving all measurement indicators by 100%. The University has also ranked fourth worldwide in the Setting and Infrastructure (SI) category, 22 globally in efficient management of water, 78th globally in the category of recycling and waste management, and 55 globally in the Education and Research category in the sustainability field.

He emphasized that the University of Sharjah’s ongoing advancements in sustainability align with the University’s vision and mission for sustainable development. This includes adhering to clean environment standards, minimizing energy consumption to reduce air pollution and harmful emissions, and transitioning to computing to limit paper consumption. He pointed out that the University of Sharjah through the Sustainability Office and its departments works towards raising awareness among students on sustainability concepts and environmental issues that have severe impact on the environment, by including sustainability courses in the academic programs of the University, encouraging students and faculty members to conduct applied scientific research within sustainability field, to find solutions to environmental problems currently facing the world, as well as conduct educational activities and events inside and outside the University about the importance of sustainability concept and integrating it in all aspects of human life to achieve environmental balance in areas of life.Prof. Riri Fitri, Chairperson of the UI GreenMetric, congratulated the University of Sharjah on its ranking for the year 2023, emphasizing the importance of achieving this accomplishment within a few years since the University of Sharjah joined the ranking in 2017. Prof. Fitri praised the University of Sharjah’s efforts in raising awareness about the importance of sustainability both within and outside the campus.
