To Activate their Memorandum of Understanding: SAASST and the Sharjah Education Council Organize a Workshop Entitled “How Do Astronomers Study Stars?”
With the aim of activating the Memorandum of Understanding between them that calls for developing national cadres in the field of astronomy and space sciences, and graduating students with the most important scientific and professional skills and knowledge in this field. Also necessitates promoting constructive and fruitful cooperation, and activating strategic partnerships based on joint coordination in awareness-raising initiatives and educating the new generation of students. The Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences, and Technology at the University of Sharjah organized a workshop titled "How Do Astronomers Study Stars?" for the Sharjah Education Council's students. This is through the remote communications platform (Zoom) to adhere to the precautionary measures issued by the UAE's relevant authorities in combating COVID-19, and to ensure the safety of all participants.
The MoU stipulates the importance of effective cooperation between the two parties in the field of astronomy and space sciences, and activating the partnership in support of talented students in the secondary schools of the Emirate of Sharjah. It also calls for organizing specialized training programs and workshops in the field, and providing the necessary tools and experts to support the development of students' knowledge and capabilities. The MoU also includes coordinating field trips for students to institutions and centers working in this field inside and outside the country with the aim of enhancing their knowledge and capabilities and qualifying them to join the labor market.
Therefore, the workshop aims to enable participating secondary level students to know how astromnomers conduct their scientific research to understand stars and the Universe. Among these skills that the workshops concentrated on is to enable the studebts to distinguish between the apparent and the absolute magnitude of a star and understand the relationship between the distance and the brightness of the star. It also works to teach them about the Hertzprung - Russell (H-R) diagram that describes the characteristics of stars, and the relationship between the temperature and color of a star as well as how astronomers calculate it.
Through strategic partnerships with various institutions and agencies in the UAE, SAASST seeks to enrich awareness and public knowledge of the developments, importance, and impact of astronomy, space sciences and technology. This to achieve the goals set for the Academy by its Founder His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimim, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah, and President of the University of Sharjah. His Highness established SAASST to contribute to serving and educating the community in all fields of space sciences, to be a global leader in scientific research, and to solidify the UAE's position as a scientific center at the regional and global levels.
