The University of Sharjah is the Headquarters of the Regional Center for Theoretical Physics in the UAE

Following Approvals from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation:

Announced during the fiftieth meeting of the University of Sharjah's Board of Trustees held last week under the chairmanship of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah, and President of the University of Sharjah. His Excellency Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the University, shared that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation agreed for the University of Sharjah to be the headquarters for the Regional Center for Theoretical Physics in the UAE. This following an earlier request the University submitted. Th Center at the University of Sharjah will be under the name: Sharjah Regional Center for Theoretical Physics at the University of Sharjah.

Commenting on this global achievement, His Excellency the Chancellor, stated that the idea of this project originated during the first Sharjah International Conference on Particle Physics. This Conference gained the favor and support of its participants of international and regional scientists as well as field experts.

The Sharjah International Conference on Particle Physics came under the patronage and in the presence of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah and the President of the University, who kindly invited the participants from scholars, experts, specialists, and guests to the Dr. Sultan Al Qasimi Center for Gulf Studies. During the Conference University of Sharjah and the International Center for Theoretical Physics in Italy signed a memorandum of understanding. This memorandum established a framework for scientific cooperation between the University and the Center for student training, the exchange of academic expertise, and the encouragement of joint research projects.

The International Center for Theoretical Physics is one of the centers of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). It was established at the initiative of the Pakistani Scientist and Nobel Prize winner for physics Muhammad Abdul Salam, and with funding from the International Atomic Energy Agency and the Italian government in 1964. Today, it is the most important center in the world for theoretical and applied physics studies and it directly contributes to the training and qualification of thousands of scientists from different countries of the world in the fields of physics, mathematics, and computing. Due to the increasing number of applicants for the services of the center, the main center decided to open branches in different regions of the world. the International Center for Theoretical Physics has opened branches in Brazil, Rwanda, and China to serve local and regional scientists and is working to open centers in Mexico and the Middle East region. That is why during the conference, and in consultation with Prof. Fernando Quevedo, Director of the International Center for Theoretical Physics, the University requested the establishment of a branch for this center in Sharjah to serve the Middle East, West, and South Asia regions. He welcomed the idea and even encouraged applying through the Sharjah government to the UNESCO General Assembly to approve the establishment of a regional institute for the organization Category 2 in the Emirate of Sharjah. This as a partnership between the University of Sharjah and the International Center for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy.

His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah and the President of the University of Sharjah approved this center headquarters marking it as a global scientific edifice that joins its likes in Sharjah to support the aspiration of scientists, specialists, and amateurs. And for it to become scientific institution for scholars of science and knowledge from regional and neighboring countries, as is the case for the various scientific and cultural institutions in the Emirate of Sharjah.

His Excellency Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, added that the centers and institutes of category 2 contribute to the implementation of the UNESCO knowledge program through capacity building and knowledge exchange in specific and precise disciplines. This in addition to theoretical and experimental research and advanced training on topics of importance. This center in the Emirate of Sharjah is a beacon of science specializing in the field of physics, mathematics, and computer science and its applications. The Sharjah Regional Center for Theoretical Physics will be established in cooperation with the Abd al-Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy, and will work within many objectives, perhaps the most important of which is to conduct research in theoretical physics. As well as research in related fields such as mathematics, computer science and informatics, but at the highest international standards. At the same time, it will be an international hub for schools and organizing workshops in the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council, the Middle East and West Asia.
