Started with Using the Online Course Management System: The University of Sharjah Students Take their Final Exams Remotely

The University of Sharjah has started since May 2nd, 2020, the final examinations for the Spring Semester of the current Academic Year 2019/2020, which was attended by more than 15 thousand students, studying in various academic and scientific disciplines. This was stated by His Excellency Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the University, who stressed that the goal of the student evaluation process, including conducting exams remotely, is to identify the student's achievement of the academic objectives and assess the extent to which the educational process outputs have been achieved. The exams were conducted remotely following all precautionary measures approved by the concerned authorities in the UAE. The Chancellor added that the University of Sharjah has taken a set of balanced and flexible measures characterized by integrity and transparency in conducting remote exams and adheres to the standards and rules set by the Ministry of Education in the United Arab Emirates, and academic accreditation requirements. At the same time, the University considered the exceptional circumstances that the students go through and gave them an equal opportunity. It also considered the nature of each discipline, both practical and theoretical as College Deans were authorized to determine the mechanism for answering exam questions, according to the nature of each major and course. The University has also taken into account the cultural and social values and standards of students, especially female students wearing niqab, in of dealing with the camera during exams, and to ensure that the special circumstances of students with disabilities are taken into account.

For his part, Prof. Elsiddig Ahmed ElMustafa El Sheikh, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, stressed that rules and specific procedures have been set for the exams for preparing and applying them and training students and faculty members during the past period, and now thanks to the full cooperation between all colleges and departments concerned the University began conducting the exams remotely for all students inside and outside the country, and working to provide all technologies in order to facilitate the examinations in an easy way and ensure the quality of the educational process. During the past two days, he added, a large number of students studying at the University's main headquarters and its branches in both Khorfakkan and Kalba were able to take exams in courses with large numbers, as nearly 1500 students managed to take the exam in one session.

In this context, Prof. Esam El-Din Agamy, Dean of the Deanship of Quality Assurance, Institutional Effectiveness and Accreditation at the University of Sharjah confirmed that the central committee responsible for following up on distance learning and exams has coordinated with all the concerned authorities at the University, the Ministry of Education and the Academic Accreditation Authority and identified all criteria and procedures that ensure clarity during the remote exams process for students, faculty, and all options available to students while maintaining the integrity and seriousness of the exams. The committee monitors students performing their exams daily to overcome any difficulties in coordination with colleges and the Information Technology Center. He also stressed that the exams are running satisfactorily according to the plans laid down.

Dr. Hussein El Mahdi, Dean of Academic Support Services at the University, indicated that the number of students who are scheduled to take exams during this semester is 15 thousand male and female students at all academic levels. The number of groups scheduled are around 2000 theoretical groups, and nearly 1000 practical groups over two weeks. It is also worth noting that all examinations are conducted remotely using the course management system provided by the University and supervised by the Academic Computing Services Unit at the Information Technology Center, including taking or monitoring the exams. The University also provided all the technical and logistical measures that enable the student and the faculty member to deal with technical problems as they happen using the hotline of technical support through which the inquiries are answered, and the appropriate solutions are provided electronically. The preliminary statistics for the first three days indicated that the exams were successfully running as expected, with a limited number of technical problems such as Internet outages that the University dealt with by giving students an incomplete assessment opportunity, so that the exam would be held at another determined time in accordance with the regulations and policies at the University.
