Scientific and Research Innovations in Various Technology Fields: University of Sharjah Students Achieve Top Ranks in the Sharjah Chamber’s Award for Innovators
The University of Sharjah students won three advanced positions in the Sharjah Chamber's Award for Innovators. The results of the Award were recently announced, as part of the closing activities of the Sixth International Forum for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of Sharjah. Three groups of students from the University of Sharjah won the second, third and fourth places from the Colleges of Computing and Informatics, Sciences, and Engineering in the Scientific Research Category.
Hybrid Seawater Desalination Plant Powered Using Solar Photovoltaic Energy
Students Shawq Al Shehhi, Shaima Mohammed, and Aisha Al Naqbi from the College of Engineering at the University of Sharjah specializing in sustainable and renewable energy engineering, won second place in the Scientific Research Category. This for the research Hybrid Seawater Desalination Plant Powered Using Solar Photovoltaics Energy and offers sustainable alternative for increased energy consumption, scarcity of fresh water, and traditional energy sources that harm the environment. The Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority can benefit from implementing this idea to reduce energy consumption.
A New Technique for Analyzing Fingerprints Using Spices
Student Saadia Liaqat from the College of Science at the University of Sharjah majoring in chemistry won third place in the Scientific Research Category. This for the idea of providing a new and cost-effective technology as an alternative to the usual analysis of fingerprints on different surfaces by comparing chemical compounds in different spices that help detect fingerprints. This technology can also be used to discover if fingerprints are inherited or determined by genetics. Several methods were used to test the success of the technology such as the equipment used and the surfaces interacting with the technology. This in addition to the quantities used for spices in the experiments to support the relevant authorities in the fields of genetics, medicine, and forensics.
Diagnosing COVID-19 with CT Scan Using Artificial Intelligence
Students Hudhaifa Al-Rifai and Maryam Orabi from the College of Computing and Informatics at the University of Sharjah majoring in Computer Science were awarded fourth place for the research Diagnosing COVID-19 with CT Scan Using Artificial Intelligence. The research idea is to diagnose COVID -19 and diseases related to the respiratory system with a CT scan using artificial intelligence. During the experiment, models of CT scans of patients and healthy people were used to train the artificial intelligence system and evaluate its effectiveness in detective COVID-19. What distinguishes this research is that the examination result is quick, instantaneous, and it is inexpensive for the patient. The University of Sharjah was supportive of the idea as it provided its laboratories for the experiments that the research team worked on. The community in general and hospitals will benefit from this innovation if it is applied.
