SAASST Organizes a Highly Informative Lectures on Astronomy and Space Sciences

The Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences and Technology (SAASST) at the University of Sharjah organized during the month of February two highly educational lectures as part of its monthly series of public awareness of space sciences and astronomy lectures held on the third Wednesday of every month to attract enthusiasts, students, and professors in the field of astronomy and space sciences. This is with the aim of delivering the scientific information in a simplified, easily digestable manner as well as raising awareness of the importance of this field and the latest developments in the UAE Space Sector. The first lecture under the title &Wings of Imagination by Ms. Salma Subhi, Research Assistant at the Meteorite Center at SAASST, took the attendees on a journey that explored the ancient imaginations of space, the concept of imagination and how it inspired creativity in the astronomy and space field development and applications, as well as how imagination stimulates deep thinking and finding answers to the creation of the vast Universe in which we reside.

The second lecture under the title Dark Flight Calculation of Meteor Path by Mr. Mohammed Talafha, Observer and Research Assistant at SAASST's Sharjah Observatory, explored a number of topics, including: the types and general characteristics of meteors, the main characteristics of meteor detection, speed, size and distance of meteors from the observer, meteor mass, meteor interaction with the atmosphere, and methods of calculating the different meteors paths. A large number of the University of Sharjah's faculty and staff members and students, as well as astronomy and space sciences enthusiasts, attended the lectures.

It is worth noting that the Academy organizes this type of lectures every third Wednesday of every month, in line with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council, Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah, who founded SAASST as a national development project and research center that seeks to serve and educate society in all areas of space science and to be a world leader in space sciences and technology research while establishing the United Arab Emirates as a scientific center in the Arab Gulf region and the world.

Due to the continuous support of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, and the effective involvement of His Excellency Prof. Hamid M.K. Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, SAASST is home to a number of laboratories, including: CubeSat Laboratory, Radio Astronomy Laboratory, Meteorite Center, Space Weather and Ionosphere Laboratory, and the Sharjah Optical Observatory. During the last two years, the Academy also published over 30 papers in international scientific journals and is expecting more accomplishments using the new 40-meters radio interferometer. Therefore, the Academy aims to serve the field of space science at the national, regional, and international levels by working on the dissemination of sound scientific research, as well as building partnerships and relations with leading universities and scientific research institutions. This is also in addition to spreading awareness of the importance of the space sector and scientific astronomical culture, and the development of qualified national cadres in this field within a highly astronomy and space sciences aware and knowledgeable society.
