A Workshop on Supervising PhD Students at the University of Sharjah
The Research Outreach Department of the Vice Chancellor's Office for Research and Graduate Studies at the University of Sharjah organized a workshop for Women in Research entitled "How to Supervise PhD Students." Prof. Madjid Merabti, College of Computing and Informatics, presented the Workshop during which he shared with other faculty members several skills, experiences, and rules needed for supervising PhD students. Prof. Maamar Bettayeb, Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies, attended the Workshop along with several faculty members from the University's various colleges.
The workshop also dealt with several themes including how to manage students' expectations through discussion and prior agreement on the method of work, and mastering the language, time management and forming a balanced supervisory team.
He also discussed the advantages of having a good PhD supervisor who has a strong and active publishing record in the field of scientific research and has ample time for supervision and support of students until completion of their theses. Prof. Merabti also addressed some of the psychological challenges that the supervisor faces.
