A Workshop on "Drug Information Services" at the College of Pharmacy at the University of Sharjah

The College of Pharmacy at the University of Sharjah, in cooperation with the Drug Information Center in the Department of Health in Abu Dhabi, organized a workshop under the title "Drug Information Services", with the aim of introducing different and specialized fields of work and to qualify the graduates of the College of Pharmacy to keep in pace with modernity and meet future requirements with competencies and expertise capable of providing quality health care and drug information.

The Workshop started with a speech by the Dean of the College of Pharmacy Prof. Ayman Noureddin, in which he reviewed the importance of drug information for patients and health care providers. Then Dr. Sheikha Al-Suwaidi, specialized in providing drug information at the Health Department in Abu Dhabi, talked in the first part of the Workshop about the services provided by the Center and their importance and the system for answering patient inquiries and health care providers and providing updates in this field. She also touched on the importance of drug services in the world, and the nature of the work of drug information centers around the world. Finally, she gave a presentation on how to evaluate questions received from patients or health care providers, and how to analyze them and provide the answer in a practical way using the rules and sources of modern practical information adopted in this field. She noted the need to distinguish between types of questions and applicants, so that the answer is specific and scientifically accurate. Then she presented cases related to drug use, treatment questions and how to answer them.

Then Dr. Firas Jasim Gerges started a discussion session in which the work requirements in drug information centers were reviewed and the way to gain valuable experience. Dr. Osama Ibrahim also presented a view on work in this field, stressing the importance of workers being knowledgeable of drug information with practical experience in this field. Dr. Abdel Mawla Abdel Karim, Head of the Department of Pharmaceutical Practice and Therapeutics at the College of Pharmacy, concluded by talking about what pharmacy colleges can work on to provide appropriate competencies to work in this field, and how new graduates can acquire the necessary expertise to work in drug information centers.
