Sustainability at UoS

Sustainability is the cornerstone of the University of Sharjah's commitment to developing a healthier, more ecologically aware campus and community. Initiated in the academic year 2014/2015, the Sustainable UoS Campus Project is a prime example of our commitment to minimizing environmental effect.

Through the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Graduate Studies (VCRGS), the Director of the Research Institute for Science and Engineering (RISE) presented a proposal titled "Towards a Green University: Reducing the Use of Water and Electricity at the University of Sharjah" to H.E. the Chancellor. The plan called for assembling a group of knowledgeable instructors and students to research cutting the university's energy and water use. To facilitate coordination of these activities, RISE proposed in the academic year 2015/2016 the creation of the "University Campus Sustainability Committee," which was formally constituted in 2016/2017.

RISE's goal was to integrate social, environmental, and economic aspects into UoS campuses to create living labs for sustainability.

Our main objectives are to

  • Apply sustainability principles to make UoS campuses more sustainable.
  • Recommend practical approaches for reducing energy and water consumption.
  • Enhance the university's reputation within the community.
  • Raise awareness among faculty and students.
  • Encourage research and education in sustainability.
