Sleep quality and Irritable Bowel Syndrome among University of Sharjah students A cross-sectional study

The objective of this cross-sectional study was to determine the prevalence of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) among students at the University of Sharjah and to investigate the potential association between problematic internet use and IBS. The study involved a sample of 300 male and female participants from the University, and IBS symptoms were assessed using the Rome III criteria. Findings revealed that 27.24% of students had IBS, and 18.4% reported poor sleep quality according to the Pittsburgh sleep quality index. The study identified significant associations between IBS and poor sleep quality, fields of study, and current living conditions. Given the high prevalence of IBS, the study emphasizes the urgent need for intervention strategies to address its impact on student health and well-being.
