Internet Addiction and Irritable Bowel Syndrome among University of Sharjah Students
This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the prevalence of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) among University of Sharjah students and investigates the association between problematic internet use and IBS. A sample of 300 male and female participants was conveniently selected from the University of Sharjah. IBS symptoms were measured based on the ROM 3 criteria. Results showed that 27% of the participants reported experiencing IBS, with higher proportions observed among individuals with severe internet addiction. Significant associations were found between IBS and living conditions. Also, a significant association exists between internet addiction and IBS. The study highlights potential risk factors for IBS, including BMI group, permanent residence, field of study, internet addiction, and living conditions, indicating the need for further investigation to confirm these findings and explore underlying mechanisms.
