Why Applied Design?
The Department of Applied Design is home to three design programs. It centers its design instruction on collaborative projects with partners from the community. The Department offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design and Textile, Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design, and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Visual Communication.
The Fashion Design and Textiles Program emphasizes acquiring knowledge, skills and understanding of professional standards in creative and technical fields of fashion and textile design. The Program adopts learning processes through research, broad experimentation, and application of theory through practice, with a focus on sustainable views on traditional practices fused with advanced technology Combining fashion design with textile design allows students to develop a unique identity and applies knowledge and skills in imaginative and technically profound ways within and in line with contemporary global industry practices. Students complete a self-directed collection in their senior year presented at the graduation exhibition. By fusing textile and fashion design, students create a distinct identity that meets modern industry requirements. The four-year curriculum prepares graduates for a variety of careers in fashion design, textile design and production, creative direction, brand development, styling, consulting, garment production, technical management, fashion journalism, retail management, costume design, and fashion event production as well as entrepreneurship.
The Interior Design Program focuses on the development and enrichment of interior environments through interdisciplinary studies and sustainable practices. It is the art and science of creating building interior and related elements towards improving the quality of human life, their health and welfare. The Program focuses on integrative practice where design concepts and applications are a core component of the learning process. This is achieved by enhancing student's abilities and skills through research-based problem solving coupled with hands-on practice allowing for a smooth transition between theory and practice, academia and professionalism. Students complete a self-directed project in their senior year presented at the graduation exhibition. The four-year curriculum prepares graduates for a variety of careers in diverse creative and design industries. These include freelance design commissions for interiors and furniture design, product and prototype design and production, exhibition, and retail installations as well as entrepreneurship.
The Visual Communication Program advocates for interdisciplinary learning and teaching experience encouraging critical analysis, inquiry, self-directed and independent learning. It exposes students to the duality of communicative languages coupled with various representational skills, both digital and manual. The Program ensures student's engagement in creative and innovative real and hypothetical projects emphasizing a systematic approach to visual communication. The curriculum is based on a mix of local and global practices with an emphasis on bilingual representation and a theoretical framework stemming from our student's heritage and traditions Students complete a self-directed project in their senior year presented at the graduation exhibition. The four-year curriculum prepares graduates for professional careers in various cultural and design institutions as well as the print and digital media industry. This includes freelance design, publishing and printing, product design, campaigns and advertising, identity and brand development, illustration, typography, animation and video art, information design, web and digital development as well as entrepreneurship.
