Zero Waste Upscaled Fashion

Kampala-based fashion designer Bobby Kolade’s brand BUZIGAHILL is committed to “redesign(ing) second-hand clothes and redistribute(ing) them to the Global North, where they were originally discarded before being shipped to Uganda.” Their project, Return to Sender, is responding to the alarming explosion of discarded second-hand clothes that is becoming a major environmental burden. In partnership with the Sharjah Architecture Triennale and as part of its 2023 event themed “The Beauty of Impermanence: An Architecture of Adaptability,” Bobby led an intensive eight-day workshop with eight fashion design students focused on upscaling second-hand garments with zero-waste. The experiment culminated in an innovative collection that showcased the validity of the project and the participants’ creative skills in rethinking fashion design in a sustainable and responsible manner. Students included Ameena Punnilath, Azza Rashed, Bushra Shakil Sawant, Fatima Mohamed, Lana Adham, Mariam Mohamed, Maryam Masroor, and Naswa Puttekkadan. The team was led by Ms. Alina Erimia (Lecturer in Fashion Design and Textiles), with the support of Ms. Polite Mangoro (Fashion Design Technician).
