Saving our Planet One Creative Project at a Time

The College of Fine Arts and Design (CFAD) and the College of Communication (CoC) at the University of Sharjah collaborated on an art, design, and media initiative under the theme “Saving Our Planet, One Creative Project at a Time” to coincide with COP28UAE. The initiative included multiple events that took place at the SEE Institute-Sustainable City, Dubai. Over two hundred guests attended the event led by the Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, His Excellency Professor Dr. Hamid Al Naimiy, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Professor Dr. Yousef Haik, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs and Branches, Dr. Amina Almarzooqi, as well numerous faculty and students, families, and sustainability advocates.

CFAD curated an interdisciplinary exhibit featuring art and design projects from Fashion Design & Textiles, Interior Design, and Visual Communication departments. The exhibit ran from December 9th, 2023 to January 9th, 2024, and was open to the public. The aim was to spark a love for nature and open venues for innovative means in support of climate change. The exhibit was led by a team of faculty including the project manager Dr. Iman Ibrahim (Assistant Professor in Interior Design), exhibition curator Ms. Asil Albaghdadi (Lecturer in Interior Design), brand designer Dr. Hala Georges (Assistant Professor in Visual Communication), and multimedia specialist Ms. Madiha Jamil (Assistant Professor in Visual Communication).

Concurrently, the College of Communication held the International Student Film Festival - COP2: Migration and Climate Change. It screened over 25 short films by students from all over the world as part of the Climate and Migration Film Festival at COP28UAE. The festival showcased a series of films produced and directed by students from several international universities and was organized by the University of Sharjah, the University of California-Los Angeles (UCLA) and the University of Oxford. The International Film Festival opened with guest speaker Sepeda Hazem (Iraqi film director), who screened her film “No Choice but to Leave.” The event was sponsored by Sharjah Media City and the company Alugha. The General Coordinator of this International Film Festival is Dr. Alaa Makki Abdulhadi Akkof (Associate Professor in Mass Communication).
