Why Department of Medicinal Chemistry

The Department of Medicinal Chemistry Department (MCD) at the University of Sharjah serves as a vital pillar of the interdisciplinary College of Pharmacy, delivering essential education to pharmacy students through a variety of compulsory and elective courses in both undergraduate and graduate programs. With a strong emphasis on drug discovery, the department employs advanced techniques to identify novel compounds that selectively and effectively interact with biological targets, ultimately altering their functions for therapeutic benefit.

MCD's research focuses on addressing non-communicable and infectious diseases, including cancer, diabetes, bacterial, and viral infections. Recently, the department has broadened its research horizons to encompass the discovery of human disease biomarkers through cutting-edge tools like multi-omics technologies and advanced mass spectrometry.

Equipped with state-of-the-art facilities such as flash chromatography, LC-MS/MS, GC-MS/MS, ICP, ion chromatography, and NMR spectroscopy, MCD enables groundbreaking research in drug design and discovery. The department's faculty, acclaimed both nationally and internationally for their innovative contributions, have successfully secured extramural research funding and consistently engage in impactful research initiatives.

Teaching at MCD is student-centered and interactive, fostering critical thinking and hands-on learning. Faculty members also play a significant role in the college's master's and PhD programs in pharmaceutical sciences. Students benefit from a comprehensive education at the intersection of chemistry and biology, equipping them for diverse career opportunities in fields such as:

  • Forensic toxicology laboratories
  • Quality control and assurance
  • The pharmaceutical industry
  • Drug design and discovery enterprises
  • Biomedical research laboratories

The Department of Medicinal Chemistry offers an enriching and dynamic environment, preparing graduates to excel in multidisciplinary research and professional pursuits within the evolving landscape of healthcare and pharmaceutical sciences.
