THE UAE NATIONAL DAY PAVILION: Celebrating the 53rd National Day with a construction designed, built, and operated by the students of the University of Sharjah
The Design Build Workshop aims to design and build a temporary outdoor pavilion to involve engineering students in practical, hand-on activity and provide UOS with a usable facility.
The construction of the pavilion, in its pilot year, will become an annual activity, to offer all students a comprehensive educational opportunity to deal with a real-world full construction process, dealing with university-external dynamics and with the complexity of a real-world construction site. A team of students, guided by instructors and supported by contractors, applied what they learnt during their academic career. Not only this experience turned theory into practice, but it could open new horizons for students in terms of understanding and experiencing the construction process in real life, yet with simple and safe tools. The pavilion is built by means of modular scaffolding units, cladded with lightweight and safe-to-instal outdoor shading fabric. Several designed proposals for the pavilion were designed by students in a workshop in September. In the second phase, the team re-engineered the final solution, including the budget estimation and construction phase planning. Then students have contributed with the project management, and especially dealing with contractors and material suppliers. And finally, the construction phase started in early November until building completion by UAE National Day celebrations.Besides offering a valuable but intangible educational experience to students, the small temporary pavilion is a tangible benefit for the University, complementing winter-time events and activities such as National Day, Open Day, Global Day, Padel tournament, etc.
