Emerging Ephemerals: University of Sharjah Showcases Architectural Innovation at SIKKA 25!

Dubai, UAE – At the heart of Sikka Art and Design Festival 2025, under the esteemed patronage of H.H. Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, the Department of Architectural Engineering at the University of Sharjah proudly presents an extraordinary interactive installation: "Emerging Ephemerals."

This visionary project, designed by Dr. Aref Maksoud in collaboration with Eng. Sarah Alawneh, reimagines the dialogue between materiality, environment, and culture, offering visitors an immersive sensory experience.

A Journey Through Sand and Salt – Where Tradition Meets Innovation

More than just an installation, Emerging Ephemerals invites visitors to experience transformation, unity, and resilience. Crafted from Himalayan salt bricks, the circular seating formations echo the fluidity of sand dunes and the crystalline beauty of salt formations, blending seamlessly with the desert landscape.

Why Himalayan Salt?

- Antimicrobial & air-purifying properties

- Generates negative ions, enhancing oxygen absorption

- Translucent glow, evoking warmth, nostalgia, and renewal

- 100% biodegradable & recyclable – the essence of sustainable design!

University of Sharjah’s Vision Recognized on a Global Stage

This prestigious participation follows a personal invitation from H.H. Sheikh Maktoum, curator of SIKKA, who recognized the University of Sharjah’s pioneering contributions after their remarkable showcase at Dubai Design Week. This acknowledgment further cements the university’s reputation as a hub for architectural innovation, sustainable design, and cutting-edge research.
