Degree Overview
The Master of Dental Surgery in Periodontology (MDS PERIO) is a full-time, three-year Master Program with Advanced Clinical Training in Periodontology. The program is offered to certified dentists, with a minimum of two years of clinical experience, who seek to improve their competence in theoretical knowledge and clinical skills in Periodontology. The program gives the participant extensive knowledge and skills in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases and conditions of the supporting and surrounding tissues of the teeth and implants. This includes the maintenance of health, function, and aesthetics of these structures and tissues, as well as implant site development and their surgical placement and restoration.
The resident in this 3-year Master Program attains comprehensive knowledge in Periodontology allowing him/her to examine and evaluate the relevant patient history and clinical conditions and to appropriately design a comprehensive treatment plan, taking into consideration the individual patient needs and expectations. The resident is also trained in the full scope of non-surgical and surgical periodontal therapy, including periodontal plastic- and regenerative surgery. In addition, the resident acquires training in the full scope of surgical treatment steps for tooth replacement with implants, including the reconstruction – at a certain extent – of the alveolar process, and also regarding the prosthetic rehabilitation of implants, and the management of peri-implant tissue pathology. Finally, the resident is trained in the evaluation and establishment, execution, and monitoring of an individualized maintenance program.
Upon successful completion of the program, which includes a research project and the defense of a Thesis, participants will be awarded the Degree of Master in Dental Surgery in Periodontology (MDS PERIO). Learning outcomes of clinical, theoretical, pedagogical, and scientific nature are assessed throughout the program. At the end of year 3, final course fulfilment is examined in writing and orally, including the presentation of several patient cases treated during the residency, and the participant should demonstrate a high level of knowledge and understanding, skills, and approaches in Periodontology.
After introductory courses in comprehensive dentistry and research methodology, focused specialization in Periodontology is obtained through a combination of courses, lectures, seminars, and preclinical/clinical work. The department has a problem-based approach to learning, and encourages self-directed studies in the theory and practice of Periodontology. Participants are exposed to clinical cases with increasing complexity and also collaborate with residents in the national specialization program. Joint seminars with postgraduate students and specialists from other relevant subareas are often offered.
