WELCOME TO THE ELC:
It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the English Language Center (ELC) at the University of Sharjah. Our programs offers students a broad range of English language preparation so that they may pursue the academic degree of their choice from among 14 colleges and over 85 specializations at the University of Sharjah.
At the ELC, students enroll in the program that best meets their English requirements. We offer intensive English language courses across four levels that focus on the core English skills . The flexibility of our program allows students to study at their own pace and to join their majors once they meet the University's English language admission requirements.
Our Intensive English language Program (IEP) offers 20-25 hours per week of intensive English practice while our Special Skills program can be as few as three hours per week, depending on your needs. Students who study English at the ELC are also given the opportunity to take the TOEFL and IELTS exams on campus at the University of Sharjah.
Our faculty all hold outstanding academic qualifications and possess vast experience in the field of teaching English as a second language. Our program operates in full compliance with the academic standards specified by the UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Research and in accordance with international standards in the field of TEFL/TESL.
I encourage all ELC students to pursue their language learning with vigor, by attending classes regularly, participating actively in class, and completing all of their assignments. Should you experience any difficulties; you may visit your instructors at any time, and please be assured that I am always available to provide you with any guidance that you may need.

PROGRAMS & DEGREES:
The English Language Center offers the following programs, for the duration of one semester each, on the University of Sharjah's main campus:
- Foundation 1 & 2: 25 hours per week of classroom instruction in reading, writing, listening, speaking, grammar, and vocabulary development (Intensive English Program).
- Preparatory 3 & 4: 20 hours per week of classroom instruction in reading, writing, listening, speaking, and grammar.
- Summer Courses: The ELC offers Special Skill Courses (see above) during the summer. These courses allow registered students to fulfill their English language admission requirements for their majors.
- In-House IELTS and TOEFL Exams: The ELC offers several in-house IELTS and TOEFL exams throughout the year. Registration takes place on campus and students are provided with relevant information and instructions in a timely manner.
- ESP Courses: In addition to other facilities, the ELC offers English for Specific Purposes Courses (ESP) to the public. These courses include ESP for Business, Banking, Public Relations, Law, Administrative staff, Human Resources, Journalism, Transportation, Police, Security, Media, Tourism, Insurance Companies, Aviation, Islamic studies.
GRADUATE CAREER OPPORTUNITIES:
Students who go through the IEP and meet the required exit standards are eligible to enter their majors and pursue their academic careers in different colleges of the University of Sharjah such as Fine Arts, Medicine, Health Studies, International Relations, Communications, Engineering and Business to list a few. Moreover, the language skills they acquire in the program enhance their employment and further study opportunities both here and aboard.

- Four Independent Learning Centers (1 on each campus of the University)
- Six Computer Laboratories (1-2 on each campus of the University)
- Four Resource Rooms equipped with various supplementary teaching materials
- Four Resource Rooms equipped with various supplementary teaching materials
- ELC offers TOEFL and IELTS exams throughout the semester to students, staff and faculty in the University for various purposes.
- ELC offers IELTS (Academic & General) Preparation courses in summer for the general public and UoS students.
TESTIMONIALS:
- International House in Dubai expressed their gratitude for the ELC's help and support in hosting aUniversity of Cambridge CELTA course. It was the first collaborative program between International House Dubai and the University of Sharjah and it proved to be very successful.
- The Sharjah Educational Zone has expressed deep gratitude for the ELC's efforts in conducting and marking a mock IELTS test for 400 female and male secondary students from eight public schools. The tests took place in the University's Exam Hall on February 26 and 27, 2014.
