About
Background
The Energy Storage Systems and storage management Group (ESSSM) focuses on the design, analysis, testing and implementation to store energy generated by renewable resources (i.e. solar, wind, wave, hydro,…etc.). The group will investigate and develop technologies including, but not limited to:
- Electrochemical energy storage systems (EESS) such as Batteries, Hydrogen Cell and Super-capacitor.
- Flywheel Technologies.
- Compressed air energy storage (CAES).
- Pumped Hydroelectric Storage (PHS).
- Thermal energy storage (TES).
- Energy storage management and control
The group members are selected based on their solid background in various aspects of energy storage systems and have the required skills and competence to carry out projects and consultations and seek internal and external funding by submitting grant applications. In addition to yielding a healthy number of publications, reports and participate in prestigious scientific conferences, they will engage with the local and international communities to provide consultations and disseminate knowledge in the field with pertinent academic and industrial partners.

MISSION STATEMENT
To investigate, develop, and implement various energy storage systems and integrate them with predictive and control tools to regulate demand/supply cycles and couple an energy resource with the most adequate storage technology.
RESEARCH OBJECTIVES OF THE GROUP
The group aims to investigate and develop state-of-the-art research in the field of energy storage and storage control systems, transfer technology and improve the efficiencies of developed and innovative types of energy storage systems.

Highlights
The research group of Energy Storage Systems and Energy Management at the Department of Sustainable and Renewable Energy Engineering, University of Sharjah is focused on research on the development of novel functional materials and their application in sustainable energy technologies. Our group does research on energy storage technologies that have the potential to solve the energy needs of future generations. The researchers from the group work on innovative technologies to explore cost-effective and environmentally friendly materials for their direct application in energy conversion and storage devices such as chemical batteries, fuel cell, flywheels, supercapacitors, hydropower, compressed air energy storage (CAES), maritime storage, storage control, storage management.
Collaborations
- Internal collaboration:
The group expects collaboration with groups with similar lines of research, such as the Sustainable Energy Development Research Group and established centers, such as the Center for Advanced Materials Research (CAMR). All members are either members or affiliates with one of the abovementioned entities at the University of Sharjah.
- External collaboration:
Some members of the groups are already co-investigators on externally funded projects from sister institutions, such as AUS and SRA. The group coordinator (Prof. Abdul Ghani Olabi) is either an ex-director or a current affiliate of research centers in the United Kingdom (such as the University of Brunel London, Aston University, the University of the West of Scotland, Dublin City University).
