Diabetes and metabolic syndrome are distinctly the most important health concern of current time. Our mission is to conduct excellent multi-disciplinary research aimed to bring down diabetes mellitus and its related complications. We in the diabetes and metabolic syndrome research group are trying to understand the disease cause well enough for designing novel treatment strategies. The members of diabetes and metabolic research group are targeting the diabetes and its complications in all angles including epidemiological, molecular and genetic aspects. Our research aims to understand the prevalence, predictors, prevention, treatment and management of diabetes and its complications at local, regional and international levels.
- Molecular mechanisms of genes regulating β-cell function and insulin secretion.
- Prevalence and genetics of Diabetes, Hypertension, and obesity in UAE.
- Hypoglycemia unawareness and diabetic neuropathy.
- Antidiabetic features of natural and synthetic compounds.
- Covid-19 Research.
- Nutrition and lifestyle in metabolic disease.
- Identification of genes involved in glucose uptake in muscle cells.
Current Projects:
- Development, Implementation and Evaluation of Technology Mediated Lifestyle Intervention for Promoting Weight Loss and Improving Nutritional Behaviors among Young Adults.
- Relationships of Vitamin D, VDR polymorphism and adipokines and their effects on the oral health in Metabolic Syndrome.
- Assessment of Lifestyle, Anti-oxidative, Oxidative and Inflammatory Markers in relation to Metabolic Syndrome components among adults in UAE.
Future Directions:
Projects will be targeted to achieve the following objectives:
- Intervene to improve the components of MetS through dietary diversification and enhancing lifestyle and physical activity
- Study of the biochemical and genetic variations related to MetS and its components

Metaboloic syndrome and related disorders is an important health concern and an emerging concept in this area, our group has high potential of attracting collaborations with public and private sectors. Currently, there is collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Imperial College London Diabetes Center, Abu Dhabi, UAEU- Al Ain as well as Universiti Sains Malaysia. Future efforts will be targeted to expand the collaboration and hence research opportunities with the industry as well as regional and international research institutions.
The group intends to publish at least 4-5 papers in peer reviewed scientific journals with impact factor, as well as 5-6 international conference presentations annually apart from supervision of undergraduate students in relevant fields. At least one student from the current postgraduate program in Molecular Medicine will be supervised.
