Degree Overview

To obtain a Bachelor of Arts degree in French Language and Literature, the student must complete 123 credit hours. These hours are University requirements (UR), College requirements (CR), and Program requirements (PR). The allocation of the credit hours is shown in the following table:

What You Will Learn

  • Describe the sounds of French and pronounce words and sentences clearly and legibly in terms of segmental and supra-segmental features.
  • Analyze words into their respective constituents and differentiate sense relations between lexical units.
  • Analyze sentences into their basic constituents and produce well-formed sentences of various levels of complexity.
  • Analyze language at the semantic, sociolinguistic, and discoursal levels.
  • Communicate with clarity, precision, in a variety of forms and for a variety of audiences in well-organized informative and persuasive speeches, paragraphs, essays, reports or research papers.
  • Differentiate between the major teaching methods and techniques and apply the appropriate teaching method/techniques in teaching specific language skills, taking into consideration language learning principles and styles.
  • Prepare valid tests of different types to assess the various language skills.
  • Read a variety of literary genres critically and proficiently to demonstrate in writing or speech the comprehension, analysis, and interpretation of those genres.
  • Translate and interpret a variety of text types from French into Arabic and vice versa, using proper terminology and appropriate style.
  • Characterize the cultural specificities of the French speaking world.
  • Use research skills and procedures to conduct research and deliver written and oral presentations.

University Requirements

The program requires students to take 24 credit hours, 18 of which are compulsory and the 6 are electives. Seven domains are covered:

This course is based on Alter Ego I manual. The main objective of this course is to introduce learners to French and to teach them the basics of the four skills corresponding to level A1. It covers the following grammatical content: the verbs être, avoir, the definite, indefinite and partitive articles, the present, the past, the possessive adjectives, etc.

French for beginners I

Course code: 0202163 Credits: 6 Pre-requisite: 099

This course develops the four language skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking, in addition to interculturality. It covers the following grammatical content: the passé composé, the imparfait, the COD and CDI, Accord du COD, the relative pronouns etc. At the end of this course, the level acquired must reach A1+.

French for beginners II

Course code: 0202164 Credits: 6 Pre-requisite: 0202163

This course builds on the teaching of Course 103 and uses the same manual, Alter Ego II. The four language skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking, in addition to interculturality are reinforced. Focusing on communicative tasks, observation and reflection, the learning path is to understand, to practice and to express oneself. This course covers the following grammatical content: future, conditional, imperative, subjunctive, expressions of opinion, doubt, cause etc. At the end of this course, the level acquired must reach A2.

Oral and written Comprehension I

Course code: 0202165 Credits: 3 Pre-requisite: 099

This course aims to improve the oral and written comprehension skills acquired in the Beginner French course. The oral comprehension is based on various media (manual, website, and video). Students are required to complete tasks such as: understanding oral and written ritual formulas, presentations and description of someone, hobbies, occupations etc. This course also focuses on the skills needed to understand authentic written texts and training in text comprehension.

Writing skills I

Course code: 0202166 Credits: 3 Pre-requisite: 0202163

This course aims to reinforce the competence of the written expression acquired in the French for beginners course. The student learns to write easy texts by imitating models such as: filling in cards, describing someone, asking and announcing something, writing personal letters, postcards, e-mails etc. Particular attention should be paid to spelling and grammatical constructions.

Graduates of the proposed program will have a wide range of job opportunities in the private and public sectors. The labor market in the UAE offers graduates of the program job opportunities in federal ministries, media organizations, the Federal National Council, International inter-governmental organizations in the UAE (e.g. United Nations, UNHCR, etc.), embassies, national security, strategic studies and research centers (e. g., ECSSR), schools, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) offices, etc. In addition, graduates of the program may also have the opportunity to pursue study programs leading to graduate degrees (i. e., master and/or doctoral degrees). In turn, holding such a degree will qualify them for additional job opportunities in the domestic, regional, and international labor markets.
