1104611 Clinical Pharmacokinetics & Therapeutic Drug Monitoring

The focus of this three-credit hour course is clinical pharmacokinetics and therapeutic drug monitoring. Its clinically oriented approach will help prepare the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) candidates for the clinical training scheduled for the second, experiential year of the program. This course will help students to describe and use the basic concepts of pharmacokinetics in different clinical situations. The pharmacokinetics of different common medications will be discussed and used to adjust the medications dosage regimen for different patients' scenarios. Also, these concepts will be used to specify the methods and timings for therapeutic drug monitoring of these medications and how to target the required the therapeutic plasma concentration.

1104612 Clinical Pharmacy Skills I

This course will introduce the concept of patient care to students and develop their clinical skills including the proper technique to conduct a patient interview, take an accurate medication history, professionally communicate, and provide effective patient counselling. Other areas of emphasis in this course will include developing and implementing a successful adverse drug reaction reporting program (Pharmacovigilance), for their institution and identify patient populations a risk for polypharmacy and adverse medication related problems. The students will develop a thorough understanding of medication dosing basis and the use of clinical parameters, laboratory data and the proper interpretation of laboratory and patient parameters to accurately dose medications, particularly high alert intensive care medications and dosage adjustment for the neonatal, pediatric, and geriatric populations. This course will include a laboratory session to train the students in patient assessment.

1104621 Clinical Pharmacy Skills II

This course introduces the concepts and skills for advanced clinical pharmacy practice with emphasis on pharmaceutical care in hospital and ambulatory pharmacy practice settings. Evidence of the effectiveness of clinical pharmacy including patient outcomes and pharmacoeconomic impact is discussed including the strengths weakness and limitations of clinical pharmacy impact studies. The pharmaceutical care model use of patient and physical assessment, and the process of solving drug related problems will be described and practiced. In addition, the safe and effective use of medicines in vulnerable groups (Geriatric & pediatric patients), the preparation intravenous admixtures and parenteral nutrition compounding utilizing aseptic technique and clean room (USP 797 compliant facility)., hospital system management and practice process of patient clinical follow-up and monitoring via simulation will be covered. This course will include a laboratory session for hands on training in aseptic technique, intravenous admixture, and total parenteral compounding as well as physical assessment.

1104614 Public health in Pharmacy

This course will focus on providing students with a solid foundational understanding of what public health is and how pharmacists play a role as a public health provider. The course content includes an advanced knowledge basis of public health issues, an exploration of the various roles that pharmacy can provide in offering public health services, and examples of applications to pharmacy practice. Issues in public health care are examined from both pharmacy perspective and public health viewpoint.

1104622 Designing Clinical Research

The focus of this three-credit hour course is how to design clinical research with different research designs. The course also explains the basic and advanced techniques for critical appraisal of clinical literature. The different methods of bio-statistical analysis will be explained and used in the analysis of different study designs. This course will help students to develop core statistical skills for criticizing and interpreting clinical data.

1104625 Advanced Pharmacotherapy I

The focus of this three-credit hour advanced pharmacotherapy course is cardiovascular diseases. Its clinically oriented approach will help prepare the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) candidates for the clinical training scheduled for the second, experiential year of the program. This course covers normal physiology, pathophysiology, and epidemiology of the cardiovascular system and describes utilizing evidence-based medicine approaches to treat the most common cardiovascular diseases and integrates their management with preventive strategies. The course focuses on developing a comprehensive pharmaceutical care plan based on individual patient needs and comorbidities and consists of pharmacotherapy and non-pharmacotherapy options, monitoring for safety, adherence, and assessment of outcomes.

A comprehensive, patient oriented pharmaceutical care planning, based on individual patient needs, including pharmacotherapy and non-pharmacotherapy options, considering co-morbidities, age, clinical parameters, counseling needs, therapy adjustments and follow-up to assess outcomes as well as identify and solve drug-related problems and communicating with other healthcare professionals as needed to optimize their management.

The focus of this three credit hours advanced pharmacotherapy course is respiratory disorders and selected neurological diseases. Its clinically oriented approach will help prepare the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) candidates for the clinical training scheduled for the second, experiential year of the program. This course will consider normal physiology and relevant pathophysiology/pathology, epidemiology, and rationale for the treatment choice(s) of these conditions in individual patients. The disease management approach is a comprehensive pharmaceutical care plan utilizing pharmacological and non- pharmacological, individualized therapies using evidence-based medicine, patient monitoring for safety, adherence, and assessment of outcomes.

1104742 Drug Information and Toxicology Advanced Professional Experiential Placement

The Drug Information and toxicology Rotation is intended to refine the students' skills in providing pharmaceutical and drug therapy information to medical, nursing, and allied health professionals as well as patients and the community as necessary. This rotation will also introduce the student to the operation of a poison information service and provide opportunities for the student to develop the knowledge base and skills in clinical toxicology. Students will work with preceptors to identify drug information questions/requests related to toxicology and/or other conditions throughout the training.
