SAASST at UoS Organizes a Workshop on Radio Astronomy
Embodying the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, and his keenness to make the Sharjah Academy for Astronomy, Space Sciences, and Technology (SAASST) of the University of Sharjah (UoS), a leading scientific center, aims at promoting education about astronomy and space sciences at the local and international level, SAASST organized a workshop titled Radio Astronomy to promote astronomical culture and achieve scientific progress and sustainable development among society members.
The workshop consisted of several specialized lectures, where Prof. Ilias Fernini, Director of the Space Sciences Department, delivered a lecture titled he Importance of the Radio Universe during which he addressed the study of the universe through radio waves, which is one of the most important astronomical tools and one of the primary sources for understanding the universe structure. In addition to lectures delivered by team members of the Radio Astronomy Laboratory at SAASST, where Mr. Mohammad Rihan discussed radio signals and systems, Mr. Mohammad Musharraf presented on Radio Data Acquisition through HTTP Requests Eng. Abdollah Masoud delivered a lecture on Morphological Classification of Extragalactic Radio Sources. Ms. Arzoo Noorani highlighted data reduction in radio astronomy, while Ms. Samar Hassan, who discussed observing the disturbed sun.
It is noteworthy that the Radio Astronomy Laboratory focuses on two main systems for conducting scientific research, including the Decametric Radio Telescope (DRT), used to observe the Sun and Jupiter. In addition to the Sharjah Radio Interferometer (SRI) which monitors the universe, detects and analyzes radio waves emitted from Jupiter and the Sun, and studies the radio waves in the Milky Way. Recently, the Radio Astronomy Lab team at SAASST developed a new system Solar Radio Spectrometer to study solar radio bursts in the frequency range from the upper HF band to the lower VHF band (25 MHz 55 MHz).
