Nobel Laureate inspires scientists from Sharjah varsity

Professor Emmanuelle Charpentier, Nobel Prize laureate in Chemistry2020,gave an inspirational lecture to scientists at the University of Sharjah, and answered their questions. First she addressed an auditorium and live stream, giving insights into her journey to receiving the Nobel Prize, and then she joined an intimate Zoom session to answer questions from aspiring young scientists.

This included advice for young people finding their way in science. "It is important to follow your own gut feeling, to not be in contradiction with yourself, "Charpentier said. "You have to be comfortable with the decision you have made. Being successful is all about knowing one's self, and knowing what fits you." She also spoke about wide-ranging topics, including scientific publications, women in science and changing technologies. A recording of her lecture and 06A can be found at webcast.virtualevents.uk/20220525-sharjah.

This event was part of the Nobel Prize Inspiration Initiative (NPII), held in partnership with AstraZeneca and in association with the University of Sharjah, designed to help Nobel Prize laureates share their inspirational stories and insights. [twos chaired by Adam Smith, Chief Scientific Officer at Nobel Prize Outreach. He said "The event left me feeling inspired, by EmmanuelleCharpentier'swisewordsandespecially by the energy from the young scientists.

Even though Emmanuelle Charpentier and I were online, the connection with the University of Sharjah auditorium made us feel like we were in the UAE. We all got the sense of being very close to each other." Hicham Mirghani, Corporate Affairs Director GCC at AstraZeneca said "It was inspiring to witness Emmanuelle Charpentier share her revolutionary initiatives with aspiring science leaders of tomorrow, paving the way for an even brighter future in healthcare.

"Over the years, we have seen the significance and impact of nurturing ambitious young scientists to advance the future of treatment in the UAE and beyond. There is no doubt that having the right research and development capabilities is an important aspect of ensuring we continue to innovate so patients receive the right treatments at the right time. We, at AstraZeneca, are committed to partnering with academia and policy makers to together take the R&D agenda in the UAE to new heights.

" Prof. Hamid Al Naimiy, Chancellor of the University of Sharjah, expressed his happiness to meet one of the distinguished scientists to learn about her scientific achievement and transfer her personal experience to encourage students and enrich their knowledge, pointing to the university's keenness to support the field of scientific research and researchers locally and internationally, to spread science and knowledge in various scientific and research fields.

Charpentier received the 2020 Nobel Prize in chemistry "for the development of a method for genome editing." CRISPR is proving revolutionary for medicine, agriculture and research. As a tool, these genetic scissors are sophisticated yetversatile, allowing researchers to change the DNA of animals, plants and micro-organisms with extremely high precision. The technology is contributing to new cancertherapies and may make the dream of curing inherited diseases come true.
